About Us

Littlemore is an area in East Oxford with a population of just under 6,000.

The town is ranked in the bottom 10% of Parishes in the National Index of Multiple Deprivation (NIMD). It has high levels of poverty and unemployment, along with low skills and low educational achievement.

– 30% of Children in Littlemore are living in poverty

– 26% of working adults have no qualifications

– 35% of all households with children are led by a lone parent

– 23% of the population is aged under 17 years

– 14% of the population is aged over 65 years

The Parish Church (St Mary and St Nicholas) is the largest public space in the village.

It is much loved and sits at the heart of the community but the building lacks the basic facilities which are essential for the support work needed by this community – no mains water supply, toilet, catering facilities, no secure area for work with children and families, etc.

As part of the Littlemore Community Project we will develop, within the church, The Newman Meeting Place, a flexible and well equipped community space in which a range of projects can be delivered. These will include social activities (e.g. lunch club, coffee drop-in);  community information centre, mental health drop-in support groups operated in partnership with specialist agencies (including Littlemore Mental Health Centre and the Archway Foundation); exhibitions;  music therapy groups and public concerts;  pastoral counselling and a bereavement support group.

Some activities will be age-specific (over 60’s club and youth support activities) while others will encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to meet.
